All-Latino Home Run Derby
sitv_latino_sports_DO_pujols.jpg

Does life get any better than in July? Holiday weekends (I might still be recovering from the 4th), summer weather, and, of course, Major League Baseball and the All-Star Game. While the NL vs. AL clash usually makes for good TV, more often than not the most unforgettable moments of the mid-summer classic come from the Home Run Derby. Read More

LeBron James Gets Posterized
sitv_latino_sports_lebron-james4.jpg

Right off the bat: no Latinos in today’s blog (hey, we make up for the lack of Latin-ness with the Week in Review, tranquilo).   Nothing personal, just the LeBron-James-Jordan-Crawford-Nike-Dunk-Scandal features no persons of Spanish-speaking descent.  As a sports blogger, not writing about the LBJ-Getting-Posterized fiasco would be like Perez Hilton ignoring a “Brad Pitt Leaves Angelina Jolie; Moves in with George Clooney” story.  No choice, gotta write about it whether I like it or not.  Luckily, I find the whole situation endlessly fasc Read More

sitv_latino_sports_carlos_pena78.jpg

Every year (or at least for the last couple years) Major League Baseball let’s the fans vote for the final spot on both the NL and AL roster for the All-Star Game. I know, seems a little redundant because we already get to pick who makes the starting lineup, but the “Final Vote” still adds some nice drama leading up to the mid-summer classic (especially since the MLBers in contention often campaign for the last roster spot by playing their butts off and working the media). Most Red Sox fans, Yankee fans, and pretty much baseball fans in general associate Manny Ramirez and Pedro Martinez.  The two Dominicanos spent four years together in Boston, and each played an integral role in breaking the Red Sox 85-season World Series “Curse.”  Seems kind of fitting then that on the day after talking about Man-Ram we turn our attention Petey.  Unlike Ramirez (gainfully employed by the Los Angeles Dodgers) Martinez needs a job.  Currently, the three-time Cy Young Award win Read More

Go Home Manny Ramirez

Normally grown folk need to make their own decisions, but if a particular grown folk might benefit from a little nudging in one direction or another…well, I’m happy to oblige. So let me just flat-out say it: Manny Ramirez, visit your old neighborhood in Washington Heights. Read More

Latinos on MLB All-Star Game Roster

With 4th of July Weekend in the books (although you may still be feeling the after effects of BBQs and beverages), it’s time to look ahead to the rest of the summer, which of course for us baseball fans means gearing up for the All-Star Game. The 2009 version takes place at “The House That El Hombre Built” (otherwise known as St. Louis’ Busch Stadium) on July 14th. Read More

A Cuban Defector & Man-Ram Returns
sitv_latino_sports_aroldis_chapman2.jpg

Ahhh, yes, Fourth of July weekend, a time for fireworks, BBQs, and…celebrating the United States’ independence from Britain, of course.  How many people do you actually think will say over the weekend, “Man, I am so happy we’re no longer under British rule, who wants to chug a beer”? Read More
