New York Stories: Sanchez & SantanaPOSTED August, 26 2009 ![]() The City of New York apparently lays claim to eight million stories…or something along those lines. Well, today, two of the biggest Big Apple tales deal with sports, and in particular, involve a pair of the city’s most star-crossed franchises. The first marks the start to a promising new era, while the other slams the coffin door on a season to forget. One represents beginning; one signals the end, and in classic New York fashion both names are big. Dramatic enough for you? Good, then let’s talk about Mark Sanchez and Johan Santana: the Jets newest starting QB and the Mets latest casualty. ![]() Starship Latin-hoff: Mark Sanchez Named Jets Starter
Well, well, well, what a difference one shaky start makes. On Monday Sanchez puts up a “still has a lot to learn” performance against the Baltimore Ravens (3/8, 43 Yds, 1 TD, 1 Int), and two days later head coach Rex Ryan names the former USC Trojan as the Jets opening day starter. Good decision? Did Sanchez earn the #1 spot? I originally thought Ryan would go with Kellen Clemens and gradually work Sanchez into the starting spot, but this is New York and who wants to watch some soon-to-be journeyman when you have Latin-hoff on the bench. So is it a good decision? Sure, some of the best QBs in the game took their lumps as rookie starters. If Sanchez isn’t anywhere near the level of a Peyton or even a Matt Ryan, then New York ain’t the place for him anyway. As for earning the spot, who cares, let’s get the kid out there and see what he can do.
![]() Supernatural Bad Luck: Johan Santana Done for 2009
Honestly, can things get any worse for the New York Mets? Really? J.J. Putz, Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado y mas and now the squad loses Johan Santana for the rest of the year. That’s right, following an MRI on Santana the Mets announced that their ace (and the only reason to visit Citi Field other than the Shake Shack burgers) would undergo season-ending surgery. The purpose for going under the knife: to remove bone chips from the pitcher’s left elbow. Sorry Mets fans. Hey, on the bright side, team officials expect Santana to be “OK” for spring training next year…
