Mark Sanchez Fails...KindaPOSTED August, 25 2009 ![]() Normally I skip pre-season NFL games (especially when neither squad counts as “my team”) like Michelle Rodriguez avoids roadside sobriety tests. Last night, however, Mark Sanchez made his first “start” for the New York Jets, and being a guy with a Latino sports blog, I felt obligated to tune in (at least for the duration of Sanchez’s PT) and report. In his debut, the former USC quarterback drew the Baltimore Ravens as opponents and, long story short, the city of The Wire easily won the battle against Latin-hoff. Did Sanchez play terribly? No, but he also looked like a “not quite ready for prime-time player.” Sure, he finished his quarter-and-a-half of action with a 19-yard TD pass to Leon Washington, but that came after Baltimore subbed out some of its key first-string defenders. In his first two series against a full-strength Ravens D, Sanchez ended one drive by tossing a pick-for-six (watching d-linemen truck down the field like oversized toddlers never gets hold by the way), followed by another pass that should have been intercepted and returned for a touchdown (Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis dropped the ball, but nine-times-out-of-10 he makes that play).
![]() A touchdown pass against subs and a pick-and-a-half versus the big boys (come on, we have to count the Ray-Ray drop as at least a .5 interception) leads me to a pretty clear conclusion: Mark Sanchez still needs work. The good news for Jets fans, however, is that all rookie QBs need work. The problem comes when the NYJ faithful expect Latin-hoff to get under center and instantly become the next Joe Namath (or Latin-math, if you will). Relax, Gang Green, and give Sanchez some time to adjust as he transitions to the next level. Plus, let’s remember that the dude made his first “start” against arguably the best defense in the National Football League.
Set realistic expectations, Jets fans, and soon enough Latin-hoff will become Latin-math.
