After a week of waiting, can I finally speak on the David Ortiz performance enhancing drug scandal? No…not yet. Big Papi told members of the media to remain tranquilos while he collected all the necessary info (and got to the bottom) of how his name came to appear on the 2003 list of Major League PED users. Well, on Saturday, those of us looking for answers finally (hopefully) get our wish. Before game three of the current Yanks vs. Sox series (on ESPN, just in case you missed the over-the-top, overblown “Rivalry Continues” commercials), Ortiz plans to address the media during a press conference at The-House-That-Ruth-Built-By-Extension-of-the-House-Ruth-Previously-Built.
What will Big Papi say? What knowledge can he spit to save his legacy in the face of an angry and skeptical general public? Will he endorse Vitamin Water somewhere in between his explanation of lax Dominican pharmacies and formerly legal GNC products? Who knows (although the third option seems unlikely)?
With the player’s union head (the incoming Michael Weiner) present, no doubt “spinning” the matter becomes a real possibility, but all I ask of Ortiz (and I think most people feel the same way) is to give us clear and honest answers. Chances are you screwed up bigger than Marc Anthony’s character in Man on Fire (whether knowingly or unknowingly), so just own the mistake and do your best to thoroughly explain the situation. Avoid the smarmy “I Was a Dumb Jock” A-Rod approach and be more like Andy Pettitte (who basically got a free pass after coming clean on using roids to recover more quickly from an injury).
“I’m going to let you guys know what I’ve got. Period,” Ortiz said following the Sox 13-6 a$$-whooping by the Yankees on Thursday night.
Let’s hope so.
In the mean time, here’s an exclusive interview Big Papi gave with ESPN Deportes:
And now, the Week in Review…
Following up on Wednesday’s blog, Yahoo Sports hooked up an interesting piece on who’s to blame for the brief, less-than-wondrous career of Edinson Volquez
Guess who’s back, back again. Pedro’s back, back again (and fanning 11 in his most recent rehab start)
