Adios Ricky Rubio?

Remember Ricky Rubio? The shaggy-haired Spaniard who burst onto the international scene at the 2008 Beijing Olympics helping his country to a silver medal in men’s basketball. His performance subsequently led the 18-year old to become the hottest (or at least most talked about) prospect of the 2009 NBA Draft. The Minnesota Timberwolves took Rubio with the 5th overall pick (one of like 19 point guards they drafted…go figure), the Spaniard resisted going to a small-market team and floated the idea of returning to Europe for at least one more year, and then, in the words of Keyser Soze, “like that, he was gone.” Not gone” as in “getting in the town car with Kobayashi and driving off” but “gone” as in completely disappearing from the headlines. Well, he’s back. According to reports, Rubio might finally have a contract in place…with Regal Barcelona. Sorry, Minnesota.

Here’s what theMinneapolis Star-Tribune had to say about the situation:

“Spanish media outlet Marca reports Ricky Rubio is set to sign a 6-year deal with Regal Barcelona that will include a buyout clause that could bring him to the NBA and the Timberwolves in 2011. If it comes to pass, Rubio’s transfer from DKV Joventut to Barcelona will be the most expensive buyout ($5.3 million) in Europe basketball history.”

Of course, other reports put the “Ricky-to-Barcelona” deal somewhere between pure fabrication and a long shot. Just ask T-Wolves General Manager David Kahn:

"Based on the information I have attained today, no team in any league has reached a deal with DKV Joventut concerning Ricky's buyout, which must be accomplished before Ricky is released from his contract with DKV Joventut," Kahn said in a statement released by the Timberwolves early Wednesday afternoon.

My advice for Rubio: Sign somewhere already, kid.
