Adiós: Top 5 Scorecard Stories

As the old cliché goes, “all good things must come to an end.” Unfortunately, that saying includes blogs that use old clichés. Yup, today Scorecard officially says adiós after close to a year of existence. Along with farewell, I’d also like to give a big “thank you” to a bunch of different folks. Thanks to the readers, the people who left comments (shout-out to the guy with the Kobe obsession…you know who you are), the websites that served as invaluable resources (deadspin.com, espn.com, google, etc.), my editor Jesus, and Sí TV for giving me the opportunity to write about sports five days a week. Finally, thanks to Latino athletes, from the good (Albert Pujols, Oscar De La Hoya, Melo) to the not so good (the steroid users, Canseco), you represent all of us and make sports worth watching.

To wrap things up, here’s a look at the top five stories from the Scorecard era. Adiós, and thanks again to everyone.

5. Angel Cabrera Wins the 2009 Masters – A former caddie from Argentina outlasts Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson to win golf’s most prestigious title. Does it get any better than that?

4. Oscar De La Hoya Retires – The end of an era. De La Hoya pioneered the athlete-as-businessman phenomenon and served as a positive role model for Latinos everywhere.

3. The Jets Draft Mark Sanchez with the 5th Overall Pick – Can he live up to the hype? Will he be the next Joe Namath? Why can’t I stop calling him Latin-hoff? So many questions surrounding the Jets heir apparent, and the 2009 season should provide some interesting answers.

2. Carmelo Anthony Shines in the NBA Playoffs – During the 2009 postseason Carmelo Anthony, previously one of the game’s biggest underachievers, played out of his mind and put himself in the same discussion as LeBron James and Dwayne Wade. Nuff said.

1. A-Rod, Manny & David Ortiz Appear on the 2003 PED List – Forever changed the perception/legacy/reputation of three of baseball’s most high-profile stars. If these three guys used performance enhancing drugs, who didn’t cheat?

It's a shame that people like you don't get to continue what you do so well, yet Kobe, who dunks balls against people's will, if you catch my drift, roams the court a free... agent.
