I Love Super Markets!POSTED May, 14 2008 ![]() Ever since I was a youngster I've cured small bouts of depression/boredom with a quick trip to the super market. My motive was never really to purchase groceries, but just to be inside one. It took away any dark thought or looming cloud above my head. Back in the day, I'd accompnay my mom to stock up on the usual: carne, lechuga, avocadoes, chiles, eggs and leche. We'd sneak a plastic-wrapped sesame seed candy from those bins that are now extinct (probably because of us) and dance in the aisles if a cool jam from the 70s came on. (What happened to market music anyways?) Today, I walk into them to be amongst bright lights, down-to-earth people and of course, food. And if the prices are right, I usually buy. Ever since I got a boyfriend this often happens more than not. I now enjoy cooking and browsing the Food Network site for 5-star recipes. A trip to the market has become a creative outlet to explore all the ways of luring in my man with the aroma of a home-cooked meal. So you could imagine my excitement when I walked to the nearby market on my lunch break and discovered a gem hidden beside the 2 Freeway. Super King Markets are the bomb and this Glassell Park location is only one of two in LA. It's Armenian- and family-owned, very clean, has a huge selection of fresh produce, meats, cheeses, baklava and other baked goods, its very own dried fruit and nut counter, and get this: It's cheap!!!! Yup, Whole Foods-esque selctions with Food 4 Less prices! I'm so going there like everyday for lunch or just to observe the crowds, sample the nuts, be happy and plan my next way to his heart. Oh and here's the best part: Super King Markets sell a wide variety of hookahs and yummy flavored tobacco! By far, the best kept secret in LA! Check it out if you don't believe me, but don't tell too many people. www.superkingmarket.com
