ALBERTO TORRICOPOSTED February, 03 2009 ![]() ALBERTO TORRICO The son of Bolivian immigrants, Alberto Torrico is the first to belong to two ethnic caucuses (his mother is of Japanese descent): the Legislative Latino Caucus and Asian Pacific Islander Caucus. As a union lawyer for nearly 10 years, Torrico successfully led the fight against Governor Schwarzenegger’s ill-conceived proposals to privatize public pensions and eliminate benefits to the widows of fallen police officers and firefighters. He was elected Majority Leader (the second highest post in California’s State Assembly) in 2004 and named chair of the Assembly Committee on Public Employees, Retirement and Social Security (PERSS). He has authored 38 measures that were passed by the Legislature, including removal of barriers to the development of affordable housing for working families and assuring foster children don’t lose health care benefits.
