NY Guys vs. L.A. Guys

Los Angeles has sun, beautiful and outwardly fake people, and lots of malls that you can drive to, while New York has tall buildings, beautiful people who fake not being fake, and boutique-lined streets that people walk to. And among some of the many differences between the two cities are also the men.

That’s right. Not all men are created equal. In fact, the girls in New York have a saying: “Is he gay…or just from L.A.?” It’s not to be taken the wrong way—we're not calling you a bunch of fairies. What we mean is, “I’m so confused because he’s nice, easy to talk to, and a little sensitive.” That kind of behavior throws us way off because we’re used to dating men in the City who are heartless, insensitive, and only really care about their careers. We call those guys, “American Psychos.” See, there are names for everyone. This is such a funny topic that I may go ahead and spend the week sharing stories of dating the two types. But first I’ll break down some of the differences…

Asks You Out
NY Guy: Meets you at a fashion event, wearing a suit, and gives you his card. Then tells YOU to call him. In rare cases, he will take your card too.
L.A. Guy: Hanging out with friends and he just happens to be the friend of a friend, so you eventually become Facebook friends and stay in touch through that medium.

First Date
NY Guy: Takes you to a fabulous dinner at the latest “it” restaurant (economy is only slightly affecting this), talks about his line of work and his interests. Spends a lot of money to over-compensate for his lack of A. personality, B. good looks, C. job title, D. all of the above, then tries to get you to go home with him.
L.A. Guy: First date? You’re just hanging with friends like you usually do…he just happens to be texting you a lot more lately and asking “are you gonna be around?” Seems like he wants to hang out…maybe with only you next time?

First Text Message
NY Guy: Running late. Be right there.
L.A. Guy: Hi. Whatcha doing?

First Phone Conversation
NY Guy: “Hey, I’ve gotta get back to work, but just wanted to call and see if you’re going to be free in a few days…yeah, like Thursday night. OK, great. Let’s plan to meet up then. Awesome. Will talk to you on Thursday. Bye”.
L.A. Guy: “Whatcha doing? Want to hang out? Yeah, now. I dunno…maybe watch a movie or something? Doesn’t matter, we can do that first. Cool…I’ll pick you up. Yeah, I am going to Jane’s party tomorrow. You gonna be there too? Great. I’ll see you then. I mean, I’ll see you in a bit, but I’ll see you tomorrow too.”

So this is all slightly exaggerated, but you get the idea. And I’m not necessarily saying it’s better to date guys from L.A. since in the end, these are the guys that confuse us more. Plus, all guys are guys. Whether sweet or not, most don’t want a serious relationship. L.A. guys are just nonchalant about it, while NY guys are straight up about it.
